Regulations of the Library of the Istituto per i Beni Musicali in Piemonte
Art. 1 Library Duties and Services
The Library of the Research and Documentation Centre of the Istituto per i Beni Musicali in Piemonte is open to the public and holds reference material predominantly of a musicological nature or otherwise of high cultural profile, specialized in both local and general history, figurative arts, and thought.
The Library ensures the following services:
- Acquisition, organization, preservation, and development of book and documentary materials;
- Safeguarding of rare and valuable book and documentary materials;
- Publication of studies, music scores, catalogues, and records relating to musical history;
- Organization of cultural activities (Conferences, Seminars, Conventions).
Art. 2 Library Staff
The responsibility of the Library is entrusted to its Director, who is in charge of its scientific, bibliographic, and administrative management.
In particular, the Person in Charge:
- Ensures the operation of the Library and the provision of services;
- Performs functions related to the acquisition of book and documentary materials, their organization, and their availability to the public;
- Deploys staff according to service requirements;
- Oversees the proper preservation of materials and furnishings within the Library.
The employment of any volunteer staff working alongside permanent staff is regulated by specific agreements entered into with the Municipality of Saluzzo.
Art. 3 Public Opening Hours
The Library is open to the public for 15 hours per week, distributed from Monday to Friday, for at least 11 months per year.
Extraordinary public openings of the library may be scheduled in conjunction with specific events.
Art. 4 Organization of Collections: Funds and Sections
The book and documentary heritage owned by the Library includes:

The funds are organized into the following sections:
- Musicology
- Critical editions of music – Practical editions of music
- General culture – Periodicals (predominantly of a musical and musicological nature)
- Concert programmes
- Catalogues of musicians
- Sound recordings and discographic pressings
- Photographs
- Microfilms
Art. 5 Development of Collections
The collections may be expanded through purchases, donations, and exchanges.
The selection of book and documentary materials for the development of the Library’s heritage is entrusted to the Person in Charge.
Art. 6 Inventories, Registers, and Catalogues
The Library maintains and updates the inventory register on an electronic medium for internal use, which is also accessible to the public.
Art. 7 Cataloguing and Classification Procedures
All materials must be officially recorded in the appropriate accession register. Each unit must be assigned its own accession number.
The cataloguing of printed works must comply with the Italian Cataloguing Rules for authors (REICAT) and the International Standard Bibliographic Description (ISBD) rules; subject indexing must adhere to the Subject Headings for the catalogues of Italian libraries and for bibliographic information, subsequently maintained by the Central Institute for the Union Catalogue (Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo Unico).
The cataloguing of all other documents must follow the same rules, with reference to the international ISBD cataloguing description appropriate to the recording medium of the document.
Art. 8 Preservation
To ensure the correct preservation of the materials owned, the Library is required to carry out periodic cleaning, dusting, and monitoring/verification of the condition of the collections.
Art. 9 On-site Consultation
On-site consultation of works located on open shelves is free. The consultation of remaining works not directly accessible to users is carried out through the distribution staff.
Users may not leave the Library before returning the volumes borrowed for consultation.
Anyone wishing for a consulted work to remain held aside for future use must submit a request.
Art. 10 Photostatic, Photographic, and Microfilm Reproduction
The photocopying service is managed by the Library staff and is strictly reserved for material owned by the Library.
Art. 11 Rules of Conduct for the Public
Every citizen has the right to use the services offered by the Library, provided they respect the rights of others and comply, in particular, with the regulations outlined in the following paragraphs.
A reasonable level of silence is required in the entrance hall and in the distribution area.
The Reading Room is available to those who wish to consult Library materials: silence must be strictly observed therein.
Access to reserved rooms must be authorized by the Person in Charge.
Tricking/tracing illustrations or any other action that may stain or otherwise damage the material is strictly prohibited.
Photographic or photostatic reproductions may only be carried out under the supervision of the Person in Charge.
Smoking is strictly prohibited in all areas of the Library.
Art. 12 Amendments to these Regulations
Any amendment to these Regulations must be approved by the Board of Directors of the Istituto per i Beni Musicali in Piemonte.
Art. 13 Publication of the Regulations
These Regulations must be displayed or otherwise made available to the users of the Library.
